Conscious Clay Ash‑Glaze Ceramics — Buying Guide & FAQ

Order Acknowledgement: By placing an order for a Conscious Clay ash‑glaze ceramic, the purchaser acknowledges that the finished appearance cannot be fully controlled, that images are representative examples only and that no returns or refunds are accepted on finished products. Cancellations are permitted only prior to dispatch of the ash collection kit; once the kit is dispatched, cancellation will incur a $15 kit/postage fee. After the ashes are received, no further cancellation or return is possible.

1. What Is an Ash‑Glaze Ceramic?

Each vessel is hand‑thrown and bisque-fired. A specially formulated glaze incorporates a portion of cremated remains (ashes), which, during high-temperature firing, integrates into the glaze’s glassy surface. The ash influences tone, texture, and visual character, although it is no longer visible as discrete particles.

The result is a permanent, bonded finish that memorialises a loved one in an artistic form.

2. Why Variation Is Inevitable

The nature of ash and glaze chemistry means unpredictability is inherent. Factors that influence variation include:

  • Mineral and chemical composition of the ashes
  • Base glaze formulation
  • Kiln conditions (temperature, atmosphere, placement)
  • Ash-to-glaze ratio
  • Mixing and application technique

Consequently, you may observe hue shifts, speckling, mottling, gloss variation, or subtle surface irregularities. Each finished piece is unique. The images we provide are representative and not guaranteed.

3. What You See Online vs What You Receive

Website photos show examples of base glazes (without ashes) or finished pieces under controlled conditions. They serve as visual guides—not exact predictions of your final piece. The glaze swatch sheet, gallery, and video (below) further illustrate possibilities. Your final piece may deviate in colour, gloss, or texture, and you accept this by placing the order.

4. Ordering, Lead Times & Ash Requirements

Ash Submission: For the majority of pieces, we request 150g of ashes per vessel. If that amount is unavailable, the glaze proportions can be adjusted to work with as little as 20g. Please note the Tealight Relic and Trinket Plates require a smaller amount of ashes as per the product page.

Lead Time: Each piece is made to order. From the moment the ashes are received, expect approximately 8 weeks for production and dispatch.

Order Process:

  1. Place your order, selecting style, glaze, and provide address for ash collection kit.
  2. We send you the kit and instructions to safely pack and ship the ashes.
  3. Once Conscious Clay receives the ashes, production begins: forming, glazing, firing, inspection and packaging.
  4. Your completed piece is dispatched to you.

5. Cancellation & Returns Policy

These ash-glaze pieces are fully custom and made to order. No returns or refunds are accepted once production begins. Cancellations are only allowed prior to dispatching the ash collection kit. If the order is cancelled after the kit is sent, a $15 kit/postage fee will be charged.

6. Care, Display & Longevity

Thanks to the high-fired glaze method, the finish is durable if properly cared for. Use soft cloths and mild, non-abrasive detergent; avoid harsh scrubbing or tools. Prevent thermal shock (e.g. don’t pour boiling liquid into a cold piece). Display indoors in stable environments away from harsh sunlight. Over long time spans, UV or heat stress may subtly affect surface nuance.

7. Frequently Asked Questions

Can I choose any glaze colour?

Yes — you may choose from our palette (Fire, Earth, Water, etc.). However, each glaze responds differently once ashes are added, so variation is expected.

Will I see ash particles in the glaze?

No — during firing, the ash chemically integrates. You’ll see the effects on tone, texture, and colour, not visible fragments.

Can I cancel or change my order after placing it?

Cancellations are permitted only before we dispatch the ash collection kit. After that, cancellation incurs a $15 kit/postage fee. Once the ashes are received, no further cancellation or return is possible.

What if I’m disappointed with the appearance?

Variation is integral to the process. Differences from sample images do not qualify for return or refund. Please review the gallery, swatch sheet, and video before ordering to set realistic expectations.
